Explore Language & Culture in Seoul, South Korea this summer!

This program is open to all VIU students and faculty.

The Bahrom International Program (BIP) is an intensive 4-week language & culture program, offered by Seoul Women's University (SWU) that provides the opportunity to learn all aspects of Korean culture. The program is taught in English and each participant is matched with a Korean partner for the entire length of the program. There are lectures, field trips, study sessions and special events. In additional to the cultural excursions, participants complete academic components such as quizzes and a term paper.

Participants will have the option to receive "3 unassigned second year Humanities credits" for successfully completing this program - applicable VIU tuition fees apply for those who select to receive credit for this experience.

Bahrom Scholarship

In 2020, Seoul Women's University will provide a full program scholarship for participants from Vancouver Island University. The scholarship covers:

  • Accommodation at the Bahrom Education Centre during the program;
  • Program tuition and field trip expenses;
  • Domestic transportation necessary in the program, except for some afternoon outings when you may take public transportation;
  • Some meals included in the program.

Costs Not Covered by the Scholarship

  • Travel from Nanaimo to Korea and return;
  • BC medical insurance, mandatory outbound travel/medical insurance through guard.me
  • Bahrom Registration Fee: $400 USD, non-refundable due upon acceptance into the program
  • Passport
  • Gifts (a gift for your host family and some small gifts that you will give to the other program participants);
  • Some public transportation while in Korea;
  • Some meals during the program dates;
  • Personal expenses.

Application packages must include:

  4. Your program timetable for spring semester (please indicate on the timetable when you would be available for an interview)

* It is not necessary to submit photos, passport copies or the application fee to apply.  These will be requested from students once accepted.  Short listed applicants will be invited to complete a short interview.

Participant Selection

Due to limited space in the BIP, participants will be selected based on GPA, goals for participation and a successful interview.

Upon acceptance into the BIP participants will be required to submit the following documents to complete their applications:

  • Signed VIU Liability Waiver
  • 2 passport photos
  • $400 USD registration deposit (this charge will be applied to your VIU student record at the applicable exchange rate)

A mandatory orientation for all accepted participants will be scheduled in the last week of April.
